An April 2024 article from Texas AgriLife discusses the economic influence of horses in Texas with data from the American Horse Council’s National Economic Impact Study survey. Per that survey, “There are approximately 6.66 million horses in the U.S. Texas has the largest population, with about 748,829 . . . . The next closest state is California, with 477,400 horses.” About half of the horses in Texas are quarter horses.

“Land owned or leased for horse-related uses in Texas is estimated at 1.6 million acres or about 2.2 acres per horse.”

It’s estimated that about 252,326 horses in Texas — slightly more than ⅓ of the Texas horse population — are used for recreational purposes, with trail riding as the main equine recreational activity.

According to an article in Tour Texas, “…the primary breeding and ranching areas are in Denton County, north of Fort Worth almost to the Oklahoma border. The area is a national equine breeding and training area with over 300 large farms and ranches. Best known for the Quarter Horse, the area also turns out superior Thoroughbreds, Paints, Arabians, Appaloosas and more. Many disciplines are practiced here, including cutting, halter, roping, western pleasure, dressage and reining.”
